Filing Income Tax returns was never so easy, thanks to our Government ( India )
If you are an Individual, you can either use Excel or PDF utility listed here:
https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/portal/individual_huf.do
I used PDF since, I don’t have Excel on my mac. So download below pdf:
https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/portal/downloads10-11/itr/ITR1_Version1.2.pdf
Fill the pdf according to details given in your Form-16 ( provided by your employer )
After filling details, click “Check Form” button at the bottom of pdf. It will prompt you if there are any errors or missing data.
If everything is correct, click “Export to XML”. It gives you option to recalculate your tax, say “Yes” else hit “No” that will prompt you to download xml file.
Now you are ready for e-filing. Go to https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/portal/index.do
If you don’t have an account then you need first create and then login to the site: https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/portal/login.do
Now follow below steps:
- From left menu select: Select Assessment Year >> 2010-2011
- If you are individual select template ITR – 1, no digital signature and hit next.
- Now upload your XML file generated by PDF. If you get any error try regenerating XML from PDF. If your XML is uploaded correctly it will give you link to download your returns.
- Unzip downloaded file and open the pdf. Note that it is password protected. ( password = pan card no + your birthdate )
- Take the print out of this pdf and sign it where it is mentioned.
- Last step is to send this print out by regular post to Income Tax department.
You will get confirmation email on the email address mentioned on returns form.
Nice post! I filed my return through http://www.taxyogi.com today and was very satisfied with it. E-filing rocks
Doesn’t seem like the pdf is available online anymore. But it does say you can file your returns for ITR 1 only, purely online.
